Puttin down a vinyl floor

I have a room that was half carpet and half vinyl tiles.I'm gonna put vinyl flooring over the entire room.I pulled up the carpet and padding, knowing that I will be putting 1/4"(I think) underlayment in that area. Now, the section that had the vinyl tiles is just staring at me.Can I put the new vinyl over the old tiles in that area ,meanwhile putting the new underlayment in the old carpeted area(which now sits 1/4" below the vinyl tiled area)? Also must I remove old staples that were holding down the carpet padding...these staples are pretty much flush with the plywood floor which will also be covered with the new 1/4" underlayment

Installing vinyl

Underlayment and surface preparation are very important to the success of your vinyl installation. Any imperfection in your underlayment will show through the new vinyl and cause vinyl to wear unevenly. Outlines and patterns in old floor coverings may show through new vinyl and cause uneven wear.
