second floor

my kitchen floor needs replacing, it is already approx. 1/2" higher than the adjoining family room floor. do i need to remove the existing vinyl floor to put down a new one? i would like to avoid putting down a 1/4" underlayment. could i use a leveling compound or should i scrap off the old floor?
thank you in advance for your assistance.

Installing new vinyl floor

You will need to follow manufacturer's recommendations regarding subfloor, underlayment, and surface preparation to maintain product warranties. There are transitional pieces that will cover the adjusted heights between floor coverings and floor heights. Check with your manufacturer for recommendations.
