putting down underlayment -ok to use nail gun?

Is it okay to use a nail gun with staple nails to put down the underlayment (1/4 inch plywood) prior to installing the vinyl floor? I am replacing an old floor - took up the vinyl but too much debris remains underneath so I want to put an underlayment. The vinyl itself is being installed by a pro. Any help would be appreciate..thanks, Ed

I'd probably use a screw guy and deck screws. I'd worry about the nail heads eventually popping up.
