Can sheet vinyl flooring be installed over vinyl tile without removing the tile?

Installing vinyl over vinyl floor tiles

The success of your new floor covering installation will depend upon how secure the current floor covering is attached to the subfloor. Existing floor covering will need to be stripped of all wax, soil, oil, and other contaminants. Embossed tiles and seams will need to be covered with floor patch material to produce a super smooth surface for the new vinyl. Installing new vinyl over old floor covering will probably void any manufacturer's warranties on new floor covering. Installing 1/4" plywood underlayment over old floor covering will provide you with a fresh, smooth, clean surface for your new floor covering. Check manufacturer's warranties for recommendations and warranty requirements.
