Uneven Floor Tiles

I am laying a Ceramic Tile floor in my kitchen. I have 2 different tile styles and will be creating a pattern. The tiles are different thicknesses. What can I do to make them level on the surface?

After you spread mortar evenly over surface set thicker tiles, then butter the back of each thinner tile before you set them, then push down until even with thicker ones.

Back butter means, apply thinset to the back of the tile. This will make the mudbed under the thinner tiles thicker, thus raising them to the disired height.
