To seal or not to seal???
#1

My husband and I just built a new home and we have ceramic tile in 2 bathrooms. We want to know if it's best to seal the grout, grout and tile or not to seal at all. We seem to be getting all different types of answers on what to use, some say don't seal at all, others say yes but no silicone...we're really confused! Any insight???

Sealing grout
Ceramic glazed tile does not need sealing. Grout, however, is porous and tends to be absorbent of oils, soils, and stains. Sealing of grout with a penetrating grout sealant following manufactuer's application instructions tends to be recommended.

It sure is one of those tricky things. Depending upon who you ask, the planets and the stars, the month and weather forecast, you'll get a different answer.
The two tile shop owners near me both have a "Why bother?" stance on sealing. From my experience, I tend to agree.

Sealing tile
My tile distributor did not recommend getting involved in selling sealants or sealing tile. My internet research reveals that it is recommended in areas that will be exposed to soiling because grout is porous and will absorb oils, soils, and stains. I had tile installed in two bathrooms in my last home. The installer left me a bottle of sealant for me to apply. White and light colored grouts tend to show soiling more so than darker colored grouts.
