subfloor prep

I'm in the middle of a gut reno on a kitchen. We may choose to install ceramic tile as a finished floor. I have just completed construction on the flooring which is 2x8 16"oc with a max span of 8.5'. On that I have nailed (no adhesive) two layers of 3/4" cdx plywood (total 1.5" of plywood). Nails are spaced 6" on edges and 12" in field.

I plan on using Ditra as a v.b. and stress release layer but do I need to put a layer of 1/2" cementboard down as well. Seems like overkill. On the other hand the Ditra site reco's only a 5/8" plywood substrate over 16" spaced joists... that seems a little weak to me.

Thoughts?

Hi
No you don't need to put cement board down too...you have enough thickness there. Ditra is spec'd for 5/8th that's true..but with 2x10 joists. You have 2x8, so you need the extra thickness. Ditra works just fine over 5/8th, though a lot of people think it's not enough,...I've never had a problem with it.
