Question mud bed or backer board?

I am in the process of getting estimates to have my kitchen and foyer tiled. Two of the three contractors plan to use backer board, the third wants to use a mud bed. Is any one method better than the other, or does it not matter? Thanks for your help.

Hi
There is nothing better than a mud bed...and I mean a true mud bed...not that wire lath coated with a skim coat of thin set method..which is pretty useless. A true mud bed will be close to an inch thick or more. Backerboard is good too if it is installed properly..that is, it is set in a bed of thin set before it is fastened to the floor. Schluter DITRA is a good choice also. if you can find it in your area....it costs just a bit more than cement board, but is only 1/8" thick.
