Economical Tile fix suggestions needed...

I have a bathroom I just inherited where the color schemes are the worse imaginable! While the tile is in good shape, I want to know if it's possible to paint the tiles so the bathroom is at least tolerable? Do they make paints for glossy tiles? Some of the tiles I want to paint little designs on, I'm an artist, to give it some interest.

I'm looking for an economic solution (the walls are tiled half up and the floors are tiled as well).

I've never done it myself, but yes, it can be done and you can even use latex if you want. I've read varying instructions for painting ceramic tile before--some said use latex, some said use oil based paint; some said scuff the tiles with sandpaper first, some said glossy tiles are fine to paint over. So you may want to research this further to find the best method for the most durable finish. At the very least, you'll need to clean the tiles thoroughly, use a good quality primer and then 2 coats of paint.
