HELP!! Decorative tile

we are installing tile in the bathroom and the decorative pieces go first around the tub. Using 8" tile above it and it will not stay in place - what are we doing wrong?? does the tile need a base to sit on?

might help

Im also in the begining stages of laying tile around the tub, after wrecking out the old tub and tile, wall. Not that im an expert, cause im not, but what ive found is: the new tub came with a spacer around the top of the tub, about 1\8 inch thick. you may be able to use a thin piece of wood so the tile doesnt set on the tub. And yes trowel on the mastic, set the tile. my question is where do you start? Ive beeen told to start in the middle and work out.
