cutting slate floor tile

I've installed ceramic floor and wall tile, but never slate. I would like to tile a bathroom floor with slate. Can I cut it with my tile cutter or do I need a wet saw? Or maybe some other method? Thanks!

I just finished doing my basement bathroom in slate, it looks wonderful. You definately need a wet saw or the stone will cleave. Slate is porous as well and you will need to apply a stone sealer when you are finished. Wait untli the grout cures before applying the sealer. FYI if you want your slate to have the wet look, they make a sealer for that, check your local tile shop.

Depending on your slate, It is sometimes advisable to seal it beforehand. This can make grout cleanup much easier. Some slates are extremely porous and grout will burn them. When in doubt, seal first.
