kitchen tile project
I am wanting to tile my kitchen floor and need suggestions regarding surface prep. The existing subflooring is 3/4" plywood with 3/4" particle board (not OSB) on top of it. I'm wondering if I should put 3/8" backerboard (with thinset) on top of the existing particle board, sealing the joints and edges, or if I should lay 1/4" exterior plywood over the particle board first, then 1/4" or 3/8" backerboard. All replies are welcome.

Particle board is unnacceptable for a tile installation.Put down a layer of 1/4" birch plywood followed by 1/4" Utilicrete CBU.Follow mfgs instructions!!
Plywood should be either stapled down or screwed every 3-4" on the edges and every 6-8 through the field of each sheet. Same for utilicrete except use hot dipped galvanized roofing nails after bedding in a layer of nonmodified thinset.Use a modified thinset to set your tile.
