Changing fireplace

I have a fireplace that is 6x6 white ceramic. It is dull and boring. Can this be painted? If so, what products should be used.

Also can I just add different tile right on top of what is there? My preference would be to add a tile I liked but I cannot afford to have the fireplace ripped out and replaced. It is definately something I would want to do myself.

ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

More than likely YOU CAN tile over what is there. To take out some tile that is there wouldn't be "ripping out and replacing the whole fireplace" and shouldn't be that difficult or expensive.

A tad more information would be needed from you.

Is it a "real" fireplace or an insert? (Not that inserts aren't "real" I guess)

Is the existing tile adhered to drywall, brick, what?

Is there a tiled hearth and is it elevated?

Can you email a photo?

If you tile over what is there what will be done with the tile edges?

Questions, questions, questions!!!
