tile over countertops

Im trying to tile over countertops in kitchen. It is laminate, My question is do I need to peel the laminate off before installing the tiles or is it ok to leave on? Also what other problems might I run into? Thanks in advance for any advice

Laminate cuts and that stinkin' metal that connects the backslash laminate to the countertop laminate. You need to remove the laminate and if the top is plywood install a CBU, or cement board over the ply. The CBU is bedded in thinset then fastened with roofing nails, or in the case of a counter I prefer cement backerboard screws.
If the laminate is installed over particle board it needs to be removed and replaced with ply. I like 3/4'' min cdx.
