Last night our ceramic tile in the hallway was making loud "popping" noises. Now the tile feels hollow when I walk on it and it sounds like broken glass underneath. The floor was professionally installed a little over a year ago. Does anyone know what causes this? What we need to do about it? Why didn't the rest of our house tile "pop"...they're all connected! (Our entire house is tiled except the bedrooms and all the tile is connected.) HELP!!!!!

:confused: I have received conflicting information from two tile installers. One says it is best not to revmove the vinyl flooring. They want to trim any loose vinyl away, build up the floor level where necessary, then lay the ceramic tile on top of the vinyl. He says I don't want to expose any cracks and the vinyl will act as a good barrier. Another installer says they ALWAYS remove the vinyl and would NOT ever lay tile on top of vinyl. He says if there are any fine cracks, they will be sealed properly before the tile installation begins. I have gone online and seen that do-it-yourselfers have done it both ways. What is the preferred way for a "professinional install." Thanks in advance for your advice.
