Ceramic over ceramic?

I am planning to remodel one of the bathrooms in my 20 year old home. The room in question is about 40 sq. ft. and already has 1" x 1" (poor quality) ceramic tile on the floor.

There is an excellent base under this floor and there is no movement, squeaks, etc.

Can I lay 12" x 12" tile over the existing tile?

Is there any special pre-treatment necessary?

Dave
