scoring/staining concrete

Hello,

I have recently closed in my patio and would like to score a design and stain the concrete flooring. I am interested if anyone has experience doing this, or if anyone knows of some good websites to learn more techniques on scoring and staining?

The majority of my questions deal with which blade to use to score the concrete and what kind of stain is the best to use?

Ceramic Tile and Subfloor Status

I have done my homework and looked through MANY postings, but must ask a question. I am removing linoleum from a bathroom floor to replace w/ ceramic tile. I have no problems w/ installation, prep, etc. BUT (the BIG BUT)...The 1/2" plywood under the linoleum has gotten wet and rotted over the years. No problem here, as I can cut out the bad spot(s) and replace w/ new plywood. (Is the plywood floor directly under the floor covering what is termed "subfloor", or is the "subfloor" the base layer further beneath this first sheet of plywood? I want to make certain I am understanding terms correctly.) Here's the problem: The wood beneath this 1/2" plywood has also become rotted. There are no more layers of floor; Linoleum, 1/2" plywood then these one and one-half-inch (1.5" or 1-1/2") planks over joists. To replace these rotten planks, must I pull up enough flooring above the planks so that I can replace an entire plank at a time, or may I "splice" two of them together at a joist? Also, since there is wood directly underneath the bathtub that is also rotten, will I need to pull out the bathtub and repair the floor beneath the bathtub, too? The bathtub is not ceramic but a plastic of some sort, with the same plastic lining the walls for the shower. It is not a one-piece insert. If I must pull out the bathtub, should I go ahead and buy/make a new bath/shower, or is this a matter of preference? While I am on the subject of the bathtub, I just thought of something else. If there is water leaking into the floor's wood, must I locate this and fix it? The "leak" appears to just be at the junction of the bathtub itself and the floor. All the plumbing looks fine. The caulking job was done very poorly and looked like someone tried to stretch the last bit of caulk out of the tube because the caulk was MUCH thinner at the leaky end of the bathtub than at the other end. Or should I just burn the house down and have a new one built? (Actually, my wife and I are getting a new house in about two years, if this has any bearing on how much time and money I need to put into the quality of the floor repair.) Thank you!Read More

This is the situation. We remodel the bathroom first and installed Standard 12X12 ceramic tiles on concrete subfloor (foundation). Later we did the rest of the house. We installed 3/4" solid oak over 3/4" plywood subfloor. At the door of the bathroom there is a huge difference in height between the two floors and my wife says that that is ridiculous. We decided that since we have to fix the height of the bathroom floor, let's just go ahead and re-do the bathroom floor with another tile. Old tile is in good condition and is not loose or anything. Question/s. I have a 1 1/4" height difference what should I do? Do I have to remove the old tile to install two layers of plywood to bring everything to height? or Can i install either playwood or backerboard on top of old tile or both? Question/s 2) If I install plywood and backerboard on top of it as a subfloor, where is the toilet bowl suppose to seat on. the plywood or the backerboard and will the bowl be way to high from the existing plumbing to still have a good tight seal?.
