proper application of floor tile

after reading some of the posts of this board i have become alittle nervous about a tile installation i just did. i did not back butter the tiles i laid in a 6x8 room. i DID check to see that there was sufficient thinset applied on the first tile and then another one later on. on the second one i was thin and added some more thinset. i am nervous about some of the other ones though. how can i test my application for soundness?? the tiles are already laid and i have partially grouted.

another question. when laying the tile in the thinset, how much force should be used to push the tile into place? also, how far should the twisting go?

one last question, what are the effects of not having enough thin-set? will the tiles just come up, crack or what??

1. with smaller tile no need to back butter.
2.as for testing unless you really think you messed up might just as well leave them alone now.If they crack or lose bond they failed the test!!
3.push it in to the thin set enough to knock down the groves from the trowel.
4. not enough thin set may cause the tile to break under load.-ie fridge, high heals, parties, ect. Or they might lose bond from expantion . Did you leave a expansoin joint around the perimiter? (CAULKED GROUT JOINT)

yeah, i left an expansion joint around perimter (1/4"). it's in a fairly light load area so i won't have to worry about heavy appliances. i know they were pretty hard to pry back up on the few i did check. as for the size of tile, i used 8x8's.

another thing i just remember that might help. after setting all the tile, i used a 2x4 to push down on all and level them out. with that in mind, i think i'm ok. thanks.
