Question repairing tiled floor

I need to repair the tiled floor in my bathroom. It is tiled in small 1-inch tiles, probably laid in about 1950. Regrouting and waterproofing has been on my repair list, but I didn't get to it before several of the tiles about two to three inches from the bathtub buckled. I'm assuming water got underneath and the subfloor expanded as a result.

I'm completely unsure about how to do this repair. Do I need to redo the whole floor? Can I remove a patch of tiles and repair the floor underneath? If so, how?

I appreciate advice!

It really depends on whats there . Can you tell us any more? single layer or dbl. layer ply wood? Did the water get to the substrate ,is it damaged?

Good questions--I don't know what's under there. We just moved in under two years ago, and the tile was probably laid in the 50s. All I know is that the tiles buckled, and made the assumption that there was water damage. How would I find out what's underneath?

Yes, I can, when I get home from work tonight. How will I know which type of flooring I'm looking at?
