hair line crack in my ceramic tile

Hi,

I put down my ceramic tile about 3 months ago. Today I noticed that I have a hairline crack in about 7 of my tiles. I knew that the concrete was cracked before I put down the tile but was told that the new mortar out now is suppose to help prevent cracks in your tile. I need to take up those tiles and lay new while I have a chance (before something happens to my extra tile kwim) so my question is what is the right way I should prepare my concrete before I lay my new tile?

Thank you so much for your help.

Darla

Use a crack isolation membrane made for your exact situation, Nobleseal CIS -www.noblecompany.com

whenever you have a crack you need to isolate it ,in you're situation you could use nylon mesh tape and thin set,lay the tape in over the crack and with the flat side of the trowel take some thin set and flat trowel the tape to the concrete then turn a roun and comb the mortar being careful to the length of the versus side to side so you dont disturb the tape and then put the tile back in

Hi Darla,

I would use a crack isolation membrane. There are a number of them on the market, including Nobleseal CIS. http://www.noblecompany.com Another one I use is Protecto Wrap. http://www.protectowrap.com

You will need to remove enough tiles to allow the membrane ample coverage on both sides of the crack.

there is no need to spend the $50 or$75 dollars for the isolation membrane for 7 tile,if you were just starting this project i would say go ahead and do it ,also you dont have the space required to make up the difference in the heighth that the membrane will add to the floor unless you are going to tear out the 7 tile on either side to go over the hump that will be there from the membrane, that is why i said to use the nylon mesh

Nobleseal CIS is 30 thousands of a inch thick so you should be able to tile over it with a 1/4" trowel and hide it. Also the written directions state three times the size of the tile not seven. The tape failed the ANSI test for crack isolation,so will cost more if you have to tile it a third time, when the tape fails.
