nail removal from concrete

We removed carpeting from basement floor and will be installing ceramic tile. How does one remove the "nails" that held the wooden carpet strips down. they are inbedded into the concrete.Tried a hammer but took a chip of concrete out along with nail. Any suggestions on how to remove before installing tile.

Try hitting the nail on the side. A tap or two should losen it . You will still get some divots but they are no problem.

The nails come out but remove a chunk of the cement/concrete now can i use the mortar that i'm using to lay the tile to fill in these holes or do i need to first use like a "topping" mix concrete to fill the holes and then tile over. I have used a pair of pliers to pull the nails holes are then about an inch in diameter.

Your thin set will fill in the divots.
