Unhappy Dumb?#1.

I am in the process of installing laminate & ceramic in a condo. First off the floor seems to have a 3/8 layer of plaster on it is this enough for ceramic. This condo is on the 3rd floor. I dont know the width of joists, etc, can't see them. Do I need to install Cement board overtop or not.

Plaster isn't a suitable substrate for ceramic tile, yes you need to install the cbu or else something like ditra under the ceramic.

Could be gypcrete, I suppose, I'd still get rid of it & use a better underlayment. JMO

Dell, you're up wayyy too early. Just hit the snooze button, my friend!

No one likes Gypcrete (except the people that sell it). Getting rid of it is always an option.

If it is Gypcrete and you're not chopping it out, Ditra over top is the way to go. It'll let any moisture out that may get into the Gypcrete. Sheet-applied membranes will only hold it in there.

I am unsure what it is! Its on a 3rd floor of an apartment built in 1984. I notice hairline cracks in it. Do you know how thick subfloor is spec for an apartment.

For ceramic tile it's 1 1/4" of subfloor, regardless of what floor it's on.

D Taylor's right about the gypcrete, cover the junk up with ditra.

i think what you have here is called elastocil,it is a light weight concrete that they us e for condos and apartments anything over 2 stories high is perfectly acceptable to go over as long as you use some sort of membrane such as mapei maplastic or similar product e.c.o. has one as well.Do you have a neighbor or someone on the third floor you can ask and see if they have the same thing in their unit if so, more than likely elastocil
