Installing Travertine

I'm installing 18" Travertine and am having trouble getting the tiles flush. Any suggestions?

Flush or even? How big of an area are you troweling with thinset? Maybe it is trying to set up on you before the tiles are in it.

The client wants the tile surfaces totally--and I mean totally--flush with each other. I'm applying a medium-bed marble and granite thinset with a 3/4 U-notch trowel, about 12 SF at a time. But here's the thing: I'm redoing someone else's screw-up. First I had to take up all the old tile (whole job is 370 SF) and then get off all the old thinset. But I couldn't get off all the old thinset. And, I didn't use an SLC. However, it's not too late to start over. In which case, I'll use an SLC--but can I put it over the old thinset?
