How do I level floor after removal of ceramic tile?

I have recently removed ceramic floor tile, and want to know the best way to level (get ridges smooth, the ones that were holding the tiles to the underlayment) before putting down new underlayment.

Strip off the old underlayment that the tiles were attached to, down to the plywood. After making sure you have 2 layers of plywood, install new underlayment (cement board) by bedding it in thinset cement. Install the new tiles on the new underlayment.

What ever you do, don't install tile directly on plywood. You will be asking for problems if you do.
