Post Ceramic Tile

My son in law and I are talking about laying ceramic on counter tops in a kitchen. Can ceramic be placed over formica or do you have to take the formica off first?

If the counter top is sound you can roughen up the surface then set tile .I would use 1/4" backer board however. My opinion!

you can do as eric says or the best way i feel is to take all that off and start over.
If that is not an option then screw 1/4 " durock to the top,is there a backsplash on this counter? If so then you'll have to cut that off first.

Also depending on what tile you want you;ll need to check on what size sink rail is available for that tile,i say this cause if the front of the sink rail only comes down over the edge 2" and the counter top plus the durock is 2 1/2" then you got a problem.

Sink rail,in case you don't know is the outside edge of the counter, the rounded part that also overhangs the edge of the counter and hides that part where the counter meets the cabinets sometime called mud cap also
