Question Vinyl Peel and stick tile

In my kitchen we have sheet vinyl. Can you put peel and stick vinyl tile directly on top of the sheet vinyl or does it have to come up. Or is there some preparation we can apply. I hate to think about removing the sheet vinyl. If that is the only way, are there any shortcuts toward removal.I'm down and dirty in Texas.

Make sure the old vinyl is squeaky clean. Peel and stick can work pretty well but it has to be firmly adhered.

Peel and stick

If your vynil floor is texured or has lines in it, in time they will show on your new tiles as you walk over them. Their is a floor patch you can spread over your existing floor that will smooth out the floor. Then you can apply your new tiles without any problems. Most home improvement stores will carry this product. Follow the instructions especially the cure time.

The patch is called an embossing leveler. It dries harder than normal leveler.
Maybe a new underlayment 1/4 would be best if you can take the height difference.

If you go the underlayment route, remember to tape the seams and go over EVERY nail or staple to make sure they are secured and level. With vinyl the slightest lump or bumb will show, especially if your using the cheaper thin tile.

Peel and stick tile

Using 1/4" plywood underlayment for vinyl floors will give you a super smooth surface and a more professional job for peel and stick tiles or new sheet vinyl.

Underlayment can't be used if this is over a concrete slab.

Embossing the floor is the way to go, unless there is already more then one layer of vinyl, and that one layed isn't cushioned vinyl.
