Question How 2 Tile w/ Handmade Pottery Floor Tiles?

I have a few questions before we start our kitchen tile renovation.

We bought a bulk "lot" of below cost handmade pottery tiles. However, this has presented us with a few challenges. There are several sizes and colors (which we chose to suit our colorscheme), and the tiles are about twice the thickness of standard ceramic tiles. Some of the tiles have irregularities inherant to their handmade nature, this being not all the tiles have an even surface nor square in the corners.

We also purchased a tile saw from Lowes to cut the thick tiles.

Since these are not your typical Lowes or Home Depot tiles I am hoping an expert can help us with this process.

1. Is there any helpful books or websites that let you design
tile patterns or have existing pattern ideas to help us?

2. We also bought a "lot" of white sand grout with the tiles. We do not want to grout with white and would like to know what products are available to to color the grout.

3. Does the grout need to be sealed?

4. Our kitchen is quite large and has an irregular shape, including an island and bay window. Is there anything we should do in choosing the pattern that won't chop up the large room or make the floor too busy? Do we tile under or around the island?

Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated.

you can durock the whole floor using 1/2 durock and then after figuring the layout determine where those accent tile go and cut out that portion of the durock and use 1/4 instead, thet will recess that tile down into the floor and make more flush with the other tile.

There are many different patterns to choose from but some tile will only look good with certain ones,so you nee to figure out what tile you want you want then figure out the design.

But if you are going to use these tile to accenet or highlight then i would not get too busy a pattern that will take away from the very thing that you are trying to accomplish which is to make those tile stand out.

Take a picture of them with you to the tile store and show them what you have and they should be able to help you out,or if possible post it on here and we'll see if we can help.Keep it on this thread though to help keep things organized, good luck!
