Acceptable subfloor/underlayment

I have 14" I-Joists on 19.2" centers, spanning 20'. The manufacturer recommends maximum span just over 21', so support should be acceptable for "normal" floor... i.e. carpet. I want to install ceramic tile at the entryway... 12" x 12" tiles, std thickness (~1/4"). I have 3/4" OSB subfloor, glued and screwed.

I'm wondering what would be the best underlayment, keeping in mind that I'd like to keep additional thickness at a minimum and cost "reasonable". I'm contemplating 1/4" - 1/2" cement board, but really don't have a clue if that's acceptable or necessary.

Although I haven't installed one, I poured pads for a support beam that could reduce the I-Joist span to 10' if necessary. I really prefer not to use the beam, but will if current support is "suspect".

Thanks in advance for help / suggestions.

ganelson,

I have VERY little experience with these matters but you may find some helpful info in my thread in this forum about floor support.

Also this forum has an interesting thread about 1/4" backerboard vs 1/2" (and I'm pretty sure 1/2" Durock cement board is actually only 3/8"):

Also some good info here about allowable floor deflection (calculator) and other info:

Good Luck, B.T.

Some more info about deflection - I'm still looking for a way to calculate it based on structure if anyone can help.

I'd like to imput size, spacing and span of joists and get the expected approximate deflection. Does such a calculator exist?
