can I REALLY do it? shower tile...

I have been wanting to re-tile my shower for some time. some grout came out and some water leaked into the closet behind the shower so now is as good of time as any.

i have researched it and have some "do it yourself" books. since i am VERY CHEAP and a wanna-be do it yourselfer, i am tempeted to give it a go myself. quotes to have it done have been $800-$1000, i would rather do it myself.

I think doing the tile is somewhat easy...cement board, mesh tape, thin set, tile, grout.

what about removing the current tile? how do i go about doing that?

you can do it.what book do you have?in a nut shell

1.slope mortar toward drain
2.losse lay membrane, upturned on side walls 3" above curb
3.install second layer of mortar over liner approx. 1 1/4"
4.bond tile.

i'm not saying don'y try it yourself.... especially if your doing the floor also they can get tricky and you dont want leaks or standing water that won't drain......800 - 1000 does sound high for a shower but that may be the going rates in your area..... if you do decide to tackle this ask someone who has done it .....sometimes books don't show what can go wrong.... and they make things sound easy.

If you're a competent diyer & have the right tools, it will be a fun, enlightening, & possibly frustrating at times project, but I'm sure you can do it with a little help from your friends here on the boards.

Ceramic Tile Setting, by John Bridge & Setting Tile, by Michael Byrne are a couple of the best books on the subject IMO. & I'd recommend them in that order.

Take a look at this thread & the links posted, should be helpful,

Do your homework & it'll be great!
