Tile over laminate counters

Tile over laminate counters

I have laminate counter tops in my kitchen. I would like to replace the laminate with tile. Is it possible to tile over the laminate? The laminate is well secured with no raised areas. How difficult a job would it be also?

Hi Suzzie & welcome to the forums.

My $.02 worth here, I'd yank it out & put down a decent plywood base; 2 layers 5/8" or better yet 3/4", glued & screwed together, thinset a layer of 1/4" cbu & then set my tile, again with thinset. Be sure to seal the grout!!!

The pre-formed laminate counters are built over particleboard & it's not a good substrate for tile IMO. Some of the guys who do this trade everyday may have a better option.

I'll follow your advice. I'd hate to go through the work to find problems later on due to the laminate. Thanks a bunch.
