Ceramic Tile over my brick fireplace

I currently have a brick fireplace. I bought all the tile I need to cover it. But, I have two questions that I first need cleared up. 1) I was told that the tiles couldn't be placed flat next to each other (I would prefer not to see any grout lines) so can this be done? If so what time of bonding should I go with, somebody suggested flexbond. 2) Since I'm covering a brick fireplace I won't be able to screw any board into the brick to tile over so will it be fine if I just spread the mix over the brick then lay my tile over it or am I leaving something out?

Any help is greatly appreciated

You'll need to parge the brick first. You can use the thin set for this if you like. Mix the thin set and trowel it over the brick. After it has dried...sand off the high spots and put another coat of thin set. After it has dried and you think it is smooth and flat enough, you can lay your tile. Remember the better you have the surface, the easier and better looking the finished job will be.
