Question Porcelain tile

What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile? Why would you choose one over the other? We are going to tile a family room and the tile we like is in porcelain.
Thanks for your help.

In most cases, porcelane in a much harder material. It resists scratching and chipping, can be used outdoors where frost is a problem. Unglazed porcelane is the same color all the way through, so it was a good choice in high traffic areas(malls, airport terminal) since even if it did wear it would be the same color and not be noticable. You can get glazed porcelane these days, in a wide range of colors. Either tile would work in a residential area though, and there seems to be more variety in ceramic over porcelane.

My folks have over 1200sq ft of porcelane and it's looked great since 1985.
In most cases, it comes down to "price". At least in my neck of the woods, porcelane is much more expensive than ceramic.
