Hello - I am in the process of installing a new tiled tub surround in my bathroom. I am using cement backerboard as the tile bed, and will use thinset to set the tiles. The question I have is what type of sealent, thinset, etc should be used to finish the joints between where the backerboard and the green board meet at the edge of the surround ? Hi, I have read lots about doing shower and tub tile, but not anything addressing building your own tile bath tub. We have a concrete foundation with a fixed drain position in our old shower stall. We knocked out one wall of mortar where we will extend the the enclosure to a total of 60 inches in length. The floor of the shower looks like solid mortar or concrete (probably concrete) and we need to bring the extended section up to the same level as the current shower floor (about 3 inches). The area we plan to extend the shower is cleared out down to the foundation. 1) What is the best way to extend the shower floor, in a way that makes it safe to fill the tub with water. I.E. is concrete alone ok (how the shower floor is currently built), or should we do something else? For the entrance for the shower there is a lip or apron about 8 inches tall and 5 inches thick. We are planning on building this up to a total of 20 inches tall and extending it around the corner for the short end of the tub. This will be built like a standard wall using 2x4s anchored into the concrete floor and into the connecting walls. 2) Is this a secure method of building the tub surround? 3) If so, what method is best for waterproofing the tub surround, so it can hold water without leaking (pvc lining? or is backerboard sufficient) 4) If pvc lining is necessary, how is the lining integrated to the solid concrete floor? 5) Then what is the best method to lay the tile over the vertical pvc lining? 6) What disasters will we run into that will cause us to run from the project pulling our hair out and screaming?
