Ceramic over marble? Other suggestions?

I have a marble threshold in what used to be an enclosed vestibule just inside my front door.
I removed the walls of the vestibule and the door frame. Now I'm left with a marble threshold with U-shaped cutouts that were cut out to set the door frame. These cutouts are down to the hardwoods which is under the marble.

I thought I would fill in these cutouts with mortar then tile over the entire threshold with ceramic tile. Is this a good idea?

I don't want to remove the threshold because it is about 100 years old and I think it'll be very difficult to remove.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
