Covering Ceramic Wall Tile

Our home was built in the 50's and has some UGLY ceramic tile in the bath. My question is, how can I cover the tile without tearing it out, or is there a way to paint the tile a different color?

Well I have been told you can go right over it with mastic and just lay new tile.. however I am not sure I would do that. I think with it being a counter it would be easier to just rip it up and lay new... just a thought.

I am remodeling basement bathroom. had water damage. replaced 1 wall with water-resist green board. (just the bottom half of wall) did not tape. left second wall intact. is painted and no water damage. installed shower floor insert and durock on walls that surround shower.did not tape. I am going to tile the shower walls up to the ceiling and both walls from floor to middle of wall (about 49"). Am I good to go or is there more prep work I need to do ,like sanding painted wall ect.Read More

I apologize if this is redundant, I just wanted to make sure my specific questions are adressed. My tile was leaking around my tub. It was installed on non waterproof sheetrock. The sheetrock was saturated. I removed the sheetrock, the lath and plater behind it and I am now down to studs. I am planning on putting up hardibacker, then tile over that. A contractor friend of mine told me not to put a moisture barrier behind the hardibacker, he didn't say why. Is this correct? Is there anything I need to consider when I put up the board. I know that I should leave a small gap so it is not touching the tub and fill that wil silicone caulk. I know I should tape the joints and use thinset on them. It looks pretty straight forward.
