Solid granite counters vs. DIY tiled granite

The obvious advantage is the lower cost of tiled granite - about $65 -$100 sq ft vs. $20 - $30.

The disadvantage is grout lines of course and edge treatments. One of the main disadvantages of tiles is the look and difficulty of edge treatments but I could easily make wood edging which looks better than miters IMO and can be easily repaired/replaced in case of damage.

In the article I saw on granite tiling, they used a surface mount sink. Can I use a sink style where the tiles overlap the sink? I suppose around the sink the tiles would have to have to have edge treatments but since it's relatively few tiles it could be done fairly cheaply.

Any solid surface product is a good investment.
