Primer before wall tile?

I have sanded down my kitchen walls and washed with TSP. Should I paint with primer before putting up ceramic tile backsplash? I have read both yes and no on the web. Not sure what I should do. House was built in 1982, standard drywall.

Since this is only a backsplash, and a DIY job at that, I am assuming your using mastic and not mortar to set the tiles.

With acrylic mastic, the walls should be clean and free of dust. Priming the wall makes it so dusty and porous surfaces are sealed and are not a bond breaker with mastic.

Most of the time, wiping down the wall with a wet sponge, works.
