Ceramic tile counter top

We are intersted in tileing our old counter top. Here is a rough plan:
Put down 1/4 inch backer board over the existing formica.
Cut out for the sink.
Tile
Use oak for front edge instead of using bullnose.

Any advice ?

I have done it that way before. Be sure to use thinset under the cement board so it fills in any voids or air pockets. Cement board screws are a PITA but you should use them to set the boards.
