Ceramic tile over concrete

I want to install a ceramic tile floor in a portion of my basement. I have been told that ceramic can be applied directly to concrete. Is this correct? Also, I would like to know what type of adhesive to use. Any suggestions?

You can apply it right to the cement. Depending on where you are there maybe a lot of moisture in the concrete (ground under concrete) which can cause problems so that needs to be addressed. The area of the country where I live, we don't really have to worry about it so I am not sure on the exacts for testing the concrete. Basically, duct tape plastic on the floor and if it is wet under it the next day you've got a problem.
A good mix yourself thinset will work. I prefer modified thinsets. The big box store has a good one.
