Getting rid of ceramic tile on the floor

I would like to remove the ceramic tile currently on my floor and lay slate. I would prefer to remove the current tile before laying the new slate, so that there is not a noticeable difference in the floor height between the rooms. I saw a lot of info on how hard it is to remove tile from the walls, but what about from the floor? I believe that the current ceramic tile is laying over cement. It is very solidly secured. How can I get it up?

Or should I just bite the bullet and lay over the current tile?

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

A demolition hammer will be needed. Rent one.
