bathroom floor ceramic tile remodel

I have a bathroom floor with 6x2 chocolate colored tiles.... owwww!! i am going to replace them with a new 12x12 tile. I have removed the old tiles and they were adhered to plywood. Im not sure how to proceed from here. do I need to put a new sub floor down? scrape off the residual adhesive? and keep the subfloor? or can i buy a thin sheet of something to put over what is there? any help would be appreciated!

thanks
rick
