kinds of tile ie) ceramic, marble, slate, granite, please. Which are most durable, and preferred for the different applications, best for floors, best for countertops, etc?

You are asking for someone to write you a book personally my friend.

I can tell you that marble, slate, granite, are natural stones and mostly soft as tile goes with granit being the hardest.

Ceramic tile is a clay product that is fired in a kiln but of course you know that. Porcelain is also a form of ceramic tile but has less of an absorbtion rate than regular ceramic and there fore it is harder.

All the tiles can be used in all the applications you suggest with great success, the choice is yours.
