removing tile from a masonry wall

I am curious if I can remove tile mounted directly on a masonry wall without damaging the wall so badly that new tile will not go up.

Should be able to. try a 2" cold chisel and a hammer. You might have to patch any deep gouges but most likely the thinset used to hang the new tile will take care of that too. Your biggest problem may be getting the old thinset off the wall and getting it smooth enough so the new tile lay flat. A grinder and a turbo diamond blade will get it off but it will make a cloud of dust the space shuttle could see.
