Backing for retiling

Several of the tiles along the base of my tub have come loose. I will have to remove the old sheetrock down to the studs. Can I use wood as a base for the tiles or would I be better off using waterproof sheetrock as a base? Thanks for your help.

Use 1/2" cement board. Check the studs for rot. Chances are real good that the sheetrock above the tile that fell off is bad for about a foot or more going up the wall. You should replace it now and avoid a future headache.

What type of screws or nails do I use to attach the cement board to the studs? What size sheets are available to buy? Can I use a table saw to cut the cement board?

There are special screws for cement board--just ask where you buy the stuff.

The pieces are in 3 x 5 sizes or 4 x 8.

A table saw would be difficult to use b/c the boards are heavy, but it would work fine--just be sure to use a masonry blade or diamond blade. For straight cuts, it is easy to just score the board a break it over and edge or a board (lots less dust, too).

Don't forget the vapor barrier over the studs before the backerboard, and Yes, I would rip it all out now and redo it correctly.
