Tile over hardwood.
#1

I am putting ceramic tile in my bathroom. It was originally hardwood floor (1940) and has since seen many treatments, so is covered with a black tarry looking adhesive. My problem is that when I install cement board, mortar and tiles, the floor will be a full inch higher than the rest of the house. Do I pull out the hardwood? Suggestions.? Thank you.

Jamie,
Just completed a bath last week with an almost identical scenario. Me being sort of fanatical, I always want to know that my base is solid, therefore the hardwood was removed and the subfloor was checked. Portions around the base of the commode were replaced and the flange was adjusted to accomodate the new tile board and tile. This is just my choice and may not be everyones. It costs a bit more in time and mess, but leaves me feeling better about my work.
Sincerely hope this helps.
