Question

I am getting ready to replace a vinyl flooring with ceramic tile. First of I know that my floor has some squeeks, so I am going to have to secure it to the floor joists. Is it a necessity to use cement backerboard? i have heard some people say that they just use one half-inch plywood. Also, if I do use the plywood, should I remove the vinyl flooring, or just put down the plywood over the vinyl?

Thanks

Craig

You should remove the vinyl to reduce movement in the floor. This movement may cause tiles to crack later on. You can use exterior grade plywood, glue it down with liquid nails (it comes in a tube). Then screw it down with drywall screws every 8 inchs. Try to hit the floor joists when you can. You also must use a flexable thinset such as FULLFLEX, you can get it at tile stores.
