I pulled up 3 loose ceramic tiles from our bathroom floor in hopes of just remortering them back into place. The grout was no problem to remove, but the old morter has become a problem. It just won't come off of the subfloor (plywood) or the back of the tiles. Does anyone have a solution to removing the old morter? I've tried chiseling but it will take me a year to get the subfloor smooth at that pace. I'm guessing the tiles have been their since the house was built. (1950) I really don't want to tear up the whole floor.

thanks,
C. Gordon

Try a carbide grinding disk or one of the small diamond disks for "moto tools" suck in a drill motor. The carbide grinding disks can be had at almost any hardware store or home center. Some of the same places carry the diamond wheels. If not there, try a tool supply store. Using either one is quicker, but more messy, than a cold chisel.
