Putting Granite tile in kitchen

Hello, I just purchased a home and it has the vinyl flooring and I would like to rip that up and put in granite tile. I noticed under the vinyl is wood, however it appears that if I were to put the tile over top of the wood then it would be higher than the joining rooms. Should I rip up the wood? I'm not sure whats below it..

Most vinyl is installed over 1/4" luan plywood, if this is what is there, rip it up, also, don't tile directly over wood, you have to find out the joist size, it's spacing and length of those joists unsupported, then how many layers of what and how thick each layer is, that is over it, Granite or any stone needs almost twice the strength in that floor, then it would need for ceramic tile.

Just thought, if i rip up the wood under the vinyl what will I be left with? Just the joists right? What would I put on top of the joists to put the tile on top of?

Just take up the 1/4" luan thats under the vinyl. Then come back and tell us what is under that, probably a 3/4" ply or OSB, hopefully not particle board because that has to come out too.

No, if the wood under the vinyl is 1/2" or better, it can stay, no way there is 1/4" plywood over the joists, but if it is over another layer of plywood, just remove the 1/4".

So I can lay tile directly on top of the wood? If its 1/2" or thicker?

Does that also apply to ceramic tile?

Thanks!

If installing tile, you will need at least 1/2" concrete underlayment board.

Dave, please tell me what you have for a subfloor now and I'll tell you how to proceed, do not go over the plywood directly, you'll need a tile backerboard or membrane first, 1/4" backerboard is all you need, they're made just for floors, 1/2" is only used if more height is needed, but first need to know the specs of that floor, especially if you plan on Granite.
