I have just removed indoor/outdoor carpeting from a concrete floor. I wish to apply ceramic tile over thinset, but the mastic adhesive which held the indoor/outdoor carpeting still remains. Can I successfully lay the ceramic tile over the dried mastic adhesive?

I would remove the old mastic either chemically or grind it off. The bond for the tile is only as good as the surface is prepared. I always like to start my projects with an absolute clean surface. Acetone or MEK or even just some stripper will make quick work of it.
