Cool

I'm installing 12x12 tile. The existing subfloor is 3/4" tongue and groove OSB, 16" oc. I've installed 5/16" Durock underlayment over the OSB. Does the Durock need to be installed w/ adhesive AND screws? My friendly home improvement person said screws are all that is needed, 8" oc.

Cool

Normally it is done with standard galvanized roofing nails, 2" or so. Suppose it could be done by screws. The nails have bigger heads and are probably faster to install. Never seen or used an adhesive too, sounds like over kill.

An episode of 'This Old House' that featured Durock (Wonderboard in the US) underlayment installation recommended and demonstrated it be laid with adhesive plus galvanized roofing nails. Unless there is some doubt about the ability of the subfloor to hold a nail I too think its overkill.

I have laid a kitchen, front foyer and bathroom just using 1.5" galvanized roofing nails (every 6" to 8") with no problem so far for 10 years.
